Torch project

Just handed in a project at college to design a torch. The first project that I have done where I have gone through the entire design process from concept generation through to a final prototype. I really enjoyed it and it is hugely rewarding to have a final model that looks exactly like how I pictured it in my head.

Violence

This video is starting to cause a big stir online. I found it incredibly watchable and it has one of the key qualities of a viral - it is shocking. I forwarded it to a friend and am sharing it here. Why? Because I want YOU to see it. What's in it for me. A little bit of kudoss I guess because in theory I found it before you did and in theory you'll come back to this blog just in case I've found something you haven't seen yet. Let's face it, the web is about SELF PROMOTION. It not about communities, or socialising. Everyone here is here is here for themselves, from brands to individuals are here to some extent becuase of self promotion. I write this blog to self promote, I go on Facebook to tell my friends what I am up to (self promote.) I read other blogs to leanr stuff that I can use to make myself more interesting. There it is then. Think about why you're online right now.

Anyhow, that was quite a rant. And I expect it has something to do with watching this video. It makes you want to go smash stuff up. I give it 48 hours before the Daily Mail write about it. It's the GTA of youtube, and they described that as "mind poison".

Back to college

Back at college for the final term of the first year - things are super busy at the moment. Working on a really interesting project involving material exploration - we've developing new materials by combining others.

Facebook T shirt stall

I had a great opportunity to take part in the University of the Arts Summer Fayre at The Truman Brewery and set up shop with Facebook T shirts. What I'm really enjoying this year is getting my work out there in front of the public. I was also selling my book of cartoons which proved popular - one girl even asked me to sign hers!

What a load of bollards

I did this project last year as a way of improving ugly traffic bollards. This design was drawn in permanent marker. I'm currently looking at a way of reproducing the design so that I can apply it to more than one bollard. I also want to create a website that encourages artists in London to use the bollard as a street light box - why graffiti a wall when you can use these :)

I remember when I was in Brisbane, how wonderful it was that all of the signal boxes had been decorated by artists, this is actively encouraged by Brisbane city council and it adds so much to the city. London still has a lot to learn.

Pre emptive seeding

So I work in viral marketing and a big part of my job is getting as many people as possible to view, share and talk about our virals. We created the Rick rolling monkey video in response to the trend on the internet. Credit to PG Tips: my boss had the idea on Thursday, we sent it to them Friday and on Monday we filmed it.

It's low low fi marketing - you can see the puppeteer (that's my fault for filming it so badly.) Today I see that there's going to be a flash mob this evening so I have change the title to Re:Liverpool street station rick roll so that when people start searching for this on youtube our video will come up as a related rick rolling video. So essentially I'm pre-empting what's happening on youtube and positioning our video so it's ready for it. Crafty. Bloody marketers.
